Early Intervention for Latino Families Project

Overview

This was a three-year research study funded by the Office of Special Education Programs and was conducted collaboratively with the Orelena Hawks Puckett Institute in North Carolina. The purpose of this research project was to study an alternative service delivery model for infants, toddlers, and their families who were eligible for early intervention services under Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The families involved in the project were of Latino heritage and used Spanish as their preferred and dominant language.

Accomplishments

  • An alternative method of early intervention service delivery was developed and implemented.
  • A training manual and procedures were developed.
  • A comparison of the alternative method to the traditional method of service delivery was conducted, as well as case studies.
  • Descriptive analyses provided information on early intervention outcomes, child behavior, and family participation in natural learning opportunities for children and families of Latino heritage.
  • A final report was completed.
