2004 Family Support Institute
In November and December 2004 a group of parents, providers, agency personnel and legislators came together over three evenings to discuss issues confronting families who are raising children with disabilities at home and to brainstorm solutions to those issues. This Institute built on the work of the first Home Health Institute, held in 1998, which explored the needs of families for home health care supports to enable them to keep their children with disabilities at home. It looked beyond the findings of the first Institute, to focus on helping the families achieve their dreams for their children’s futures. In doing so, the participants of the 2004 Family Support Institute make no statement as to the level of achievement of the recommendations of the 1998 Home Health Institute report, issued in 1999. Many of the needs addressed by those recommendations still exist, and many of the recommendations remain unfulfilled. However, the participants in this Institute recognize that their needs and dreams for their children go beyond their family units and their homes. They and their children exist in communities, and the ultimate goal for most of the families who are raising children with disabilities today is for those children to be able one day to become a part of their communities
