CT-KASA (Kids As Self Advocates)
Overview
CT-KASA is the only chapter of the national KASA organization. Kids As Self Advocates (KASA) is a national, grassroots project created by youth with disabilities for youth. Members are teens and young adults with disabilities, ages 14-24. CT-KASA members with disabilities learn how to be self advocates through information and support. They meet every month in different parts of the state. Through funding from the CT Department of Public Health, CT-KASA supports their members by providing transportation, sign language interpreters and personal care attendants as needed. This year, in partnership with the CT Department of Public Health, CT-KASA is working on issues for youth with disabilities who are transitioning into adult health care. They are creating three booklets: one for young adults, one for parents and one for physicians. CT-KASA has paid youth organizers. The Center provides office space and support for this youth led initiative.
