Plan for the Achievement of Transportation Coordination in Human Services Grant (PATHS)
Overview
The goal of this project, funded by the Connecticut Council on Developmental Disabilities, is to increase the state’s capacity to serve the transportation needs of people with disabilities. Our efforts are designed to help create a responsive, comprehensive and coordinated community transportation system for people with disabilities.
Major Activities
- In 2005 seven regional forums were held for consumers with disabilities who use public transportation. A total of 145 individuals came to the forums held throughout Connecticut, and they identified the gaps and barriers of public transportation from their perspective, as well as what works.
- In 2006 the center conducted a Train-the-trainer workshop on disability awareness and safety to teach people with disabilities to train bus drivers and other transportation personnel.
- The center assists people with disabilities to participate in the community planning process of the statewide Transportation Improvement Program. This is funded by the Federal Transit Administration to improve transportation of older adults (60+), persons with disabilities, and individuals with low incomes. People with disabilities have participated in meetings and provide input on draft plans.
- The project intends to partner with the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s United We Ride initiative. Project staff will ensure full participation of people with disabilities in the developing of a state action plan.
